HATTIESBURG AMERICAN:

BARBOUR FOR GOVERNOR

Mississippi voters will choose their next governor from between two candidates of sharply contrasting styles and experience. Republican Haley Barbour, 60, and Democrat John Arthur Eaves Jr., 41, top the ballot for the Nov. 6 general election.

We believe Barbour is the right choice to lead this state for the next four years.

Barbour has guided Mississippi through the worst natural disaster in the nation's history. His "hitch up our britches and get to work" attitude after Hurricane Katrina was representative of the leadership he has shown the past four years.

He has guided the state through financial shoals and put it on sound footing. He has been instrumental in bringing some major industries to Mississippi, such as the Toyota plant in northeast Mississippi. ...

Eaves is running an interesting campaign, to say the least. A wealthy trial lawyer, he has mostly funded his campaign using his own checkbook. He portrays himself as a Democrat who takes a conservative stand on issues such as abortion and school prayer. His populist campaign has a strong religious emphasis.

But when you peel away the rhetoric, voters will find that he's offering little in the way of substance.

Barbour is a proven leader and should be returned to office in January.
